Ghent (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): A fire at Transferium BV in Ghent caused significant smoke prompting safety warnings for residents. Firefighters struggled to control the blaze using specialized equipment but have now managed to extinguish the flames and monitor for any remaining risks.

On 28th July there was a fire at Transferium BV a freight company located on Christoffel Columbuslaan in the port area of Ghent. The fire caused a large amount of smoke prompting the fire brigade to recommend that local residents close their windows and doors as a precaution to prevent inhaling the smoke. The next day the wind changed direction blowing the thick smoke towards the north. This shift made the smoke and bad smell worse in the Meetiesland area nearby. People living there complained about the strong smoke and unpleasant odor, making the situation from the fire even more serious.

How did firefighters control the stubborn blaze at Transferium BV in Ghent?

The fire at Transferium BV was hard to control because it kept starting again. The fire brigade tried a method called “firebreaking,” where they took apart parts of the burning material to control it better. But this often caused the fire to start again in other places making it harder for them to manage. The firefighters called in another special boat to help them deal with the fire. This boat was designed to fight big fires especially ones with lots of flammable stuff like wood chips. It used water and maybe foam to put out the flames and lessen the smoke. It has been said that having this fire boat was really important in controlling the fire better and stopping it from spreading more, especially since the flames kept coming back and affecting nearby places.

The firefighters have been staying at the company to keep things under control and stop any more fires from happening since the first one. They are always there to watch out for any dangers from the smouldering wood chips. Their careful watch made sure that no more fires could start or spread from that place. The firefighters have put out all the smouldering wood chips so their main job is done. They are now leaving the site with all their people and equipment now they have finished their emergency response. They have dealt with the fire risk and things are now under control to prevent more incidents.
