Brussels (The Brussels Morning Newspaper) – High Representative of the European Union, Vice-President of EU Commission Josep Borrell, and Vice-President of EU Commission Dubravka Šuica released a Joint Statement on International Democracy Day.

In their statement, they emphasized the European Union’s unwavering dedication to bolstering and protecting democracy both domestically and internationally. They noted that 2024 is a critical year for elections, with nearly half of the global population in over 70 countries having the chance to choose their representatives. They highlighted that millions around the world are reaffirming their commitment to democracy this year, whether as candidates or voters, often in difficult situations.

How does the EU address threats to democracy worldwide?

They stated that the European Union praises individuals who defend democracy, frequently at significant personal risk. It asserts that maintaining democratic principles is essential for safeguarding and advancing the dignity of every individual, as well as for promoting social justice, inclusive development, and peace. In different regions, citizens face threats and efforts to undermine the democratic process, including political violence, electoral manipulation, fraud, misuse of state resources, disinformation, and foreign interference. Such actions compromise the integrity of elections and the core values of democracy.

What role do EU Electoral Observation Missions play in safeguarding democracy?

Moreover, the EU, through the deployment of Electoral Observation Missions and other democracy support tools, works to identify, deter, and issue recommendations on these issues to allow and encourage active participation in elections. This is not just the task of one day: the European Union’s commitment extends beyond elections. The EU supports democratic principles of participation, equality, accountability, and transparency, with a focus on including women, children, and youth in public life.

In concluding remarks, they stressed that the EU supports civic space and human rights defenders, combats corruption, and strives to enhance the rule of law. The EU advocates for and supports independent media, the safety of journalists, and the fight against disinformation online and offline, while promoting a just digital transformation. These are part of the core values that define us.
