European Parliament Vice-President Eva Kaili jailed for corruption, Luca Visentini released on conditions

Le Soir – Eva Kali, Vice-President (S&D) of the European Parliament has just been placed under arrest warrant and imprisoned as part of a vast anti-corruption investigation. His companion and former MP Antonio Panzeri also remain in the cell. The boss of the International Trade Union Confederation is released on conditions.

On suspicion of being involved in a vast corruption scheme involving current and former parliamentarians, assistants and other public figures from the European milieu in Brussels, the Vice-President (S&D) of the European Parliament – there are in all 14 Vice-Presidents in the European Parliament – Eva Kaili, of Greek nationality, was arrested on Friday at her Brussels home. Then auditioned by the investigators and the financial investigating judge Michel Claise. His partner, Francesco Giorgi, parliamentary assistant to another MP, was also referred for a hearing. At the end of this police custody, whose period could not exceed 48 hours, Ms. Kaili was placed under arrest warrant, charged with corruption, money laundering and participation in a criminal organization, learned Le Soir and Knack. His partner was also charged and placed under arrest warrant, as was former S&D MP Pier Antonio Panzeri. F., a Brussels lobbyist arrested on Friday, also remains in his cell.

Ms. Kaili’s father, who had been caught with a suitcase full of cash outside a Brussels hotel, was released. Finally, Luca Visentini, General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation, was released on conditions.

Belgian MEP Marc Tarabella (S&D) was raidedon Saturday evening as part of the same investigation.
