How does the Eurogroup influence the eurozone economic structure?
The Eurogroup is an informal institution that makes up the finance ministers of the Eurozone to facilitate coordination and discussion on economic policies related to the euro. It was established on June 4, 1998, and primarily functions to work closely with member states of the Eurozone regarding common burdens in the single currency.
At the moment, the president of the Eurogroup is Paschal Donohoe, who simultaneously holds the post of Irish Minister for Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery, and Reform. He entered office on 3 July 2020. In this role, Donohoe has assumed an important responsibility for the definition of economic policy in the countries that make up the Eurozone and other areas that are fundamentally shaping fiscal policy, economic growth, and the Capital Markets Union of the future.
The last Eurogroup meeting was on December 9, 2024. Here, the finance ministers met together with the International Monetary Fund and the European Commission to discuss the euro area economy. In that meeting, macroeconomic developments, among other things, were discussed to determine various fiscal policies for member states in the Eurozone.
