Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The European Commission announced on January 16 an initial humanitarian budget for 2025 of 1.9 billion euros.
The European Union continues to remain a top global humanitarian assistance donor, the European Commission stated. A total of 375 million euro will be assigned to the wider Middle East.
“The humanitarian situation remains extremely acute and fragile, especially in Gaza. The region has seen substantial changes in recent months, including after the recent actions in Syria,”
The European Commission said.
What is the allocation for humanitarian aid in Africa?
Ninety-five million euros will be given to North Africa and Yemen:
“a territory exposed to difficult political, economic and social challenges.”
African vulnerable people will receive 510 million euros across the continent.
Aid will be conducted in:
- West and Central Africa
- North-West Nigeria
- The Sahel
- The Lake Chad basin
- The Great Lakes region
- Central Africa
- The Greater Horn of Africa
The Southern Africa and Indian Ocean region will receive 35 million euros, while the southern Caucasus and Central Asia will receive five million euros.
How will EU funds assist Venezuela and its neighbouring regions?
In the first phase, 113 million euros will be allocated to address the crisis in Venezuela and its impact on the region, as well as assist the most vulnerable in Colombia, Haiti, Central America, Mexico, and Ecuador who are suffering from armed conflicts.
How is the EU supporting Ukraine and Asian countries?
In the third year of Ukraine’s war, the initial allocation is 140 million euros. The eight million euros will be assigned to humanitarian programs in Moldova. In total, 182 million euros will be allocated for humanitarian aid in Asia. It will be mainly for the crisis in Myanmar and its effects on Bangladesh, as well as the situation in Afghanistan.
What is the budget for sudden-onset emergencies and global crises?
The European Commission stated that more than 295 million euros are earmarked for worldwide actions, reacting to sudden-onset emergencies and unexpected humanitarian crises that may occur throughout the year. Over 110 million euros will be dedicated to horizontal actions, including innovative schemes and policy initiatives, for example, the multi-year programmatic associations, and the improved response capacity, the European Commission said.
