Strasbourg (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The European Parliament approved new committees on security, health, democracy, and housing to address pressing challenges.

European Parliament has approved changes proposed by its Conference of Presidents, launching two new standing and two special committees. As reported by the press of the EU Parliament, the current subcommittees on Security and Defence and Public Health have been remade into fully-fledged committees.

Furthermore, there will also be two latest special committees in 2025: one on the so-called “Democracy Shield” endeavour contained in the European Commission’s 2024-2029 political guidelines, and another to manage the European Union’s current housing crisis.

The modifications were put forward by EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola and the heads of Parliament’s political groups to handle Europe’s current challenges as well as Parliament’s preferences while taking into account citizen situations and the results of the European elections.

In the next steps, the composition of the two standing and two special committees will be selected by each political group and non-attached MEPs. The arrangement of the committees will then be revealed during the 20-23 January 2025 plenary session. Moreover, the subcommittees on Security and Defence, and Public Health will stop operating on the first day of the January plenary meeting and all four committees will be formally formed on the same day.
