Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, has welcomed the ouster of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad.
Eu/87’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas has responded to the toppling of Syria’s Bashar al-Assad regime, stating it represented Russia and Iran’s shortcomings.
The end of Assad’s dictatorship is a positive and long-awaited development. It also shows the weakness of Assad’s backers, Russia and Iran.

EU’s top diplomat Kallas described the collapse of the Assad tyranny as a “positive and long-awaited development.” “It also demonstrates the weakness of Assad’s backers, Russia and Iran,” she noted.
Further, Kallas stressed that the EU’s top goal was regional security. To this objective, she said, it would cooperate with all constructive partners, both in Syria and throughout the region. “I am in close contact with Ministers from the region. The process of rebuilding Syria will be long and complicated and all parties must be ready to engage constructively,” Kallas stressed.
How did Syrian rebels take control of Damascus?
Today on 8 Dec 2024 Syrian rebels declared they had expelled President Bashar al-Assad after grabbing control of Damascus on Sunday, pushing him to flee and finishing his family’s decades of autocratic authority after more than 13 years of civil war. In a seismic moment for the Middle East, the Islamist insurgents also dealt a major blow to the leverage of Russia and Iran in Syria in the heart of the region – allies who had supported Assad during critical periods in the war but were delighted by other crises recently.
The rebels stated they had entered the capital with no indication of army deployments. Thousands of people in autos and on foot congregated at a central square in Damascus waving and chanting “Freedom” after a half-century of Assad family rule, witnesses expressed. People were noticed walking inside the Al-Rawda Presidential Palace, with some leaving carrying furniture from inside. “We celebrate with the Syrian people the news of freeing our prisoners and releasing their chains,” the rebels expressed.
