Brussels (The Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The EU Council has approved a €10 million assistance measure for the Armenian Armed Forces under the European Peace Facility to enhance Armenia’s military logistics and civilian protection capabilities.

The EU Council assumes the first-ever assistance step in support of the Armenian Armed Forces. The Council adopted an assistance measure under the European Peace Facility (EPF) in backing of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia worth €10 million.

How will the EU funds benefit Armenia’s military?

For the first time, the EU determined to support Armenia from the European Peace Facility. This assistance measure strives to enhance the logistical capacities of the Armenian Armed Forces and to contribute to enhanced protection of civilians in crises and emergencies. It also strives to enhance the resilience of Armenia and rev the interoperability of its Armed Forces in case of possible future participation of the government in international military missions and operations, including those deployed by the EU. Concretely, the assumed assistance measure will permit the provision of a fully-fledged deployable tent camp for a battalion-sized unit.

What did Josep Borrell say about the initiative?

Josep Borrell, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy said, “Security is an increasingly important element of our bilateral relations with Armenia. This European Peace Facility measure will further contribute to the resilience of the country. We have a mutual interest to further scale up our dialogue on foreign and security policy and also look into Armenia’s future participation in EU-led missions and operations.”

How does the EU-Armenia partnership work?

EU council states that the support adopted today will be delivered in the framework of the EU’s partnership with Armenia, which is established on shared values and aimed at fostering peace, stability and wealth in Armenia and the South Caucasus.

The EU is dedicated to enhancing the comprehensive political and economic cooperation with Armenia, based on the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement, and to additionally strengthening our relations in all their dimensions. This includes strengthening dialogue and cooperation in the area of foreign and security policy, also containing the common security and defence policy (CSDP).

What is the European Peace Facility (EPF)?

The European Peace Facility was launched in March 2021 for the financing of actions under the common foreign and security policy to stop conflicts, preserve peace and maintain international security and stability. In particular, the European Peace Facility permits the EU to finance actions designed to amplify the capacities of third States and regional and international organisations connecting to military and defence matters.
