Antwerp (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Swedish company Einride unveiled a driverless electric truck at the Port of Antwerp. The truck is tested on September 16, 2025, to improve efficiency, support sustainable transport, and address driver shortages.
AS VRT News reported, a new self-driving electric truck has been unveiled at the Port of Antwerp. The vehicle is designed to operate at container terminals and industrial estates. It is a concept from Swedish company Einride.
What impact will Einride’s self-driving truck have at Antwerp port?
The truck comes in 2 versions. One truck drives fully autonomously, while the other can be controlled remotely by an operator. The operator can monitor multiple trucks at once and intervene as necessary.
The truck achieves full autonomy using radar and camera systems, which provide the truck with a total 360° view. Transport operations are monitored by an AI-controlled checkpoint, which can intervene or provide assistance when necessary.
“If we want to remain competitive with China and the United States, we must make this possible in Europe as soon as possible.”
Jean-Luc Crucke (Les Engagés), Federal Minister of Mobility
A driverless electric truck drove its first meters on public roads in Antwerp this morning, Sep 16, 2025. The test was allowed only with a special permit because self-driving vehicles are currently banned in Belgium.
Federal Minister of Mobility Jean-Luc Crucke (Les Engagés) said rules could change soon to allow autonomous vehicles. He added that Europe must act quickly to remain competitive with China and the United States.
“The profession is no longer attractive. This could offer a solution for transporting goods in the port.”
Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO Port of Antwerp Bruges
The truck was unveiled at an exposition at the Port of Antwerp to showcase its contribution to sustainable transport. Visitors were able to witness over 20 interactive demonstrations of autonomous technology for the roads, water, or air.
The Swedish company Einride was established in 2016. It is a leader in the field of design and management of autonomous electric trucks. The company designs vehicles that do not include traditional driver cabs and can drive on the roads, in port or at industrial locations. The newly designed trucks use radar, cameras and AI systems to drive safely and summarily. In early 2020, the Port of Antwerp started to emphasise sustainable transport and regularly demonstrated autonomous technology.
