Wevelgem (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – 3 trucks were involved in a pile-up on the E403 highway near Wevelgem this morning. The road was completely closed to traffic for several hours. Nobody was injured.
This morning, at about 9 am, the E403 highway close to Wevelgem faced major traffic disruptions due to a pileup involving three trucks. The accident happened when a lorry driver had to brake suddenly because of wet road conditions. As a result, two other trucks collided with the lorry. There were no reported injuries among the drivers, but the incident caused significant delays on the highway.
The accident resulted in the complete closure of E403 for several hours; as a consequence, a jam started on the route, which, however, slowed down traffic and persisted for approximately half an hour before being fully reopened around noon. This highway closure caused a lengthy queue of vehicles, and motorists were delayed for over 30 minutes while awaiting clearance.
Traffic was diverted during the recovery process to remove the trucks and restore normal flow. Before noon, authorities confirmed that the highway had been reopened, and traffic consequently resumed.
What factors contributed to the E403 truck pile-up?
E403 is an important transportation route in Belgium, linking different regions and allowing commercial transport. Weather factors can significantly influence road safety. This accident indicates the need to be more cautious during bad weather. There have been several cases on this highway in the last few months as well, mainly due to such conditions. Earlier this year, there were some accidents in Lichtervelde and Ruddervoorde where people were badly injured, and massive emergency services had to be called in.
As per local traffic authorities, statistics show that accidents are quite common when it is rainy, especially during the rainy seasons. Heightened awareness among drivers during such conditions therefore calls for its effectiveness.
