Since Saturday and until October 7, Dutch Week has been putting the Dutch language in the spotlight. This includes various activities, also in Brussels.
The Dutch Week is a collaboration between the Flemish-Dutch house deBuren and the Language Union. This ninth edition mainly focuses on the themes of “feeling and emotion” and, as every year, this includes numerous activities, including a whole range in Brussels.
For example, on Monday you can listen to the lecture “Declaration of Love to Dutch” by the Romanian poet Mira Feticu or follow a workshop on inclusive language use. Or maybe you’ve ever wondered why some useful words don’t actually exist in Dutch.
Then the book presentation later in the week of “The Great Missing Dictionary” by linguist Ruud Hendrickx and Dutch writer Rick de Leeuw is really something for you. You are guaranteed to walk away with a broader vocabulary: from “Hammerglas” or “damaged improvement” to “hypocrisy” and “sucking”.
Plonge
You can go to De Buren again on Tuesday with all your language questions. How do we learn proverbs and sayings and what is animal linguistics? Language experts will tell you all. In the coming week, Muntpunt offers, among other things, a “Happy Being Session” to learn Dutch while singing, and on Wednesday you can participate in the digital city game “Plonge” from the Huis van het Nederlands.
In addition, in the following days you can learn how to make your own pamphlet, what you need to do to communicate clearly about science or how to write better. All activities are free. An overview can be found on the Dutch Week website.
