BM Newsroom

Bruges (The Brussels Morning Newspaper) – October 17, 2026 – Major works by the renowned late 19th-century Irish Impressionist painter Walter Frederick Osborne RHA, including historic depictions of Dublin Zoo and a Flemish market scene in Bruges, are featured as leading lots in an upcoming online fine art auction. The sale offers collectors a rare opportunity to acquire original oils by one of Ireland’s most celebrated artist figures. Public viewing exhibitions across Skibbereen and Dublin precede the close of online bidding scheduled for Tuesday evening.

Masterworks by Walter Frederick Osborne Lead Major Online Art Auction

Two significant original paintings by the distinguished Irish Impressionist artist Walter Frederick Osborne RHA (1859–1903) have been catalogued among the primary highlights of a major online Irish and International Art auction hosted by Morgan O’Driscoll Auctioneers. The curated sale, comprising 172 individual lots of fine art, features rare works spanning late 19th-century genre painting, Impressionist landscapes, and historic urban views.

The featured artworks by Osborne include In the Market Place of Bruges (1882) and The Parrot House, Dublin Zoo (c.1890). Both paintings showcase Osborne’s mastery of light, outdoor observational painting, and atmospheric composition, which established him as a central figure in modern Irish art history.

Early Flemish Scene Carries Top Auction Estimates

Among the top-tier lots offered in the sale is Osborne’s early oil on canvas, In the Market Place of Bruges (1882). Measuring 30.60 cm by 35.60 cm (12 by 14 inches), the signed canvas is inscribed on the reverse with “Voyageur Anvers” (Antwerp Traveller) and carries an official auction estimate of €70,000 to €100,000.

The work holds significant historical provenance, having been painted during Osborne’s formative studies on the Continent following his training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. The canvas was subsequently exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) in 1884 under the same title. The scene captures daily commercial life and architectural backdrop in the historic Flemish square, executed in the plein-air style that defined Osborne’s European period.

Historical Impressionist Depiction of Dublin Zoo Offered

The second featured piece by Osborne in the auction is The Parrot House, Dublin Zoo (c.1890), an oil on canvas laid on board measuring 27.80 cm by 19 cm (10.9 by 7.5 inches). Carried with an estimated price range of €25,000 to €35,000, the artwork captures a colorful, intimate scene inside the Victorian-era zoological gardens in Phoenix Park, Dublin.

Osborne produced a distinct body of work during the late 1880s and 1890s that documented everyday social life, public parks, and urban scenes in Dublin. The Parrot House, Dublin Zoo exemplifies his delicate handling of light and human figures engaged in domestic recreation during late Victorian Ireland.

Public Viewing Schedule and Auction Logistics

Prior to the completion of the sale, public viewing exhibitions were organized across two locations. Initial viewings took place at the auctioneer’s headquarters in Skibbereen, County Cork, from Friday, 9 October to Monday, 12 October 2026. The exhibition subsequently moved to the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) in Dublin, running from Friday, 16 October through Monday, 19 October 2026, allowing potential bidders and art historians to inspect the physical condition of the works.
