Lokeren (Brussels Morning Newspaper): In June 2023, a moped delivery man was killed in Lokeren by a drunk driver speeding at 117 km/h. The driver received a 2-year prison sentence and must pay over €100,000 in damages.

In June last year, a sad accident happened on Beerveldestraat in Lokeren, where a pita delivery man died. He was riding his moped to deliver food when a fast car hit him head-on. The crash was serious, and he did not survive. Authorities mentioned that this shows how dangerous it can be for delivery workers on busy roads.

What sentences are given to drunk drivers causing fatal accidents?

The driver of the car was found to be driving recklessly, as he was drunk and speeding. At the time of the crash, he was going 117 kilometers per hour in a zone where the speed limit was only 70.

A police judge in Dendermonde has sentenced a man to 2 years in prison, with 1 year suspended if he follows certain rules. He must pay a fine of 4,000 euros and is banned from driving for 2 years. If he wants to drive again, he needs to pass medical and psychological tests, along with the written and practical driving tests. He has to pay over 100,000 euros in damages to the victim’s family. The judge noted that the man was driving recklessly and too fast, leading to serious consequences, and mentioned that he had been caught driving drunk just weeks before this incident.
