Nicosia (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Cyprus has proposed a working document to the European Council on the latest post-Assad facts in Syria and in light of current happenings in the region.

Cyprus Foreign Minister Constandinos Combos stated that Nicosia is working to get ahead of the crisis, being one of the primary nations likely to be impacted by yet another episode of instability in Syria. The composition will be consulted at the initial Foreign Affairs Council and set to the European Council of heads in Brussels later next week.

Cyprus is located in the west of Syria. Around 1.1 million people have been displaced across Syria since the land was settled into turmoil after the destruction of the Assad regime, according to United Nations calculations. Tens of thousands of displaced individuals are waiting at nearly 200 centres in northeast Syria, where support organizations are allocating food, cash, hygiene kits and other collections.

Moreover, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed his deep worry over the current and extensive breaches of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Guterres states he is extremely concerned over the hundreds of Israeli air raids on many areas in Syria, underscoring the urgent necessity to de-escalate brutality on all fronts.

The failure of Bashar al-Assad’s government has started a military reaction from Israel, which has undertaken airstrikes at military installations across Syria and stationed ground armies both into and outside a demilitarized buffer area for the first time in 50 years.
