Diegem (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The Diegem cyclocross celebrates its 50th anniversary with a 25th night race, featuring Thibau Nys, Laurens Sweeck, Michael Vanthourenhout, and Tibor Del Grosso; Sam Gooris headlines festivities.

As VRT News reported, the cyclocross race in Diegem, near Machelen, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The event has become a fixed value on the cyclocross calendar. Mathieu van der Poel is not on the start list.

Despite that absence, organiser Peter Boschaerts expects a closely fought race. He says the field is evenly matched and competitive. Several riders are confirmed to start. Thibau Nys, Laurens Sweeck, and Michael Vanthourenhout will all take part. They are expected to play a leading role in the race. Tibor Del Grosso is also among the participants.

What to expect at the Diegem cyclocross 50th anniversary night race?

Organiser Peter Boschaerts describes the evening race as the main attraction of the program. This year, the night race is being organised for the 25th time. Over the years, it has become a central part of the event.

“The course will also remain identical to last year, including the bridge that will allow for better crowd flow. We’re aiming for around 15,000 spectators. Advance ticket sales are going well, so that should be feasible,”

said Boschaerts.

“Our board is young and ambitious, so we hope to continue for many years to come,”

says Boschaerts.

“Of course, it depends on the municipality of Machelen, but we are ready.”

Diegem Cyclocross, which began in 1975, has developed into one of Belgium’s most significant winter cycling events. This event takes place annually between Christmas and New Year’s Day. The addition of a night race to the event program began around the year 2000; since then, it has grown into one of the most popular aspects of this event.

The night race is noted for its nighttime scheduling, very difficult course, and spirited atmosphere. Thousands of fans visit the event each year, which has helped solidify the Event’s reputation in Belgium and around the world for over 50 years.
