Avelgem (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A vehicle completely burned down in Avelgem before its driver pulled the car to the side. The fire brigade stopped the fire from damaging the house where the vehicle stood.

A car caught fire in Avelgem when it was moving, which resulted in its total destruction. The driver, who realised something was amiss, managed to park the car at Oedelestraat. Fire emergency services immediately arrived to stop the fire before it reached an adjacent home. The driver escaped unharmed from the accident.

The initial reports indicate that technical problems could have been responsible for the car starting to burn while it drove. The driver pulled off and stopped his vehicle near a home, although the fire completely enveloped the car. Fire personnel reacted quickly to fight the fire, which stopped additional destruction from occurring. The intense fire only harmed two items in the adjacent residence—a roller shutter and the front door glass pane—because of the heat generated by the burning vehicle.

What is the background of car fires in the region?

Nationwide fire safety records show that Belgium experiences about 1200 car fires every year despite their rarity. The western Flanders region records 10% of all regional fire emergencies because of vehicle fires. Car fires commonly happen because of equipment breakdowns, electrical faults, and problems with fuel systems.

The Avelgem Fire Department’s records show they intervened in 15 vehicle fire incidents throughout the previous five years, demonstrating the importance of scheduled vehicle inspections. The swift emergency response shows awareness since fire brigades normally arrive at incidents within an average time of 10 minutes, according to statistics.
