Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Brussels will increase trash collection in the city centre. An external company will add a 3rd daily round at 7 p.m., costing €86,500, starting from December 2025.
As VRT News reported, Brussels has decided to increase the frequency of trash collection in the city centre. The move follows repeated complaints about waste bins that are often overflowing. There are 142 bins placed across the central districts, but they regularly cannot handle the amount of rubbish.
Currently, teams from Bruxelles-Propreté empty the bins twice a day. They mentioned that routine is not enough during busy times. The problem becomes worse in the summer tourist season and during Winter Wonders.
What will Brussels gain from a third daily trash collection?
Brussels will bring in an external company to empty trash bins a 3rd time each day. Alderman for Public Cleanliness Anas Ben Abdelmoumen (PS) confirmed that the extra collection will take place around 7 p.m. It will be carried out every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. There will also be an extra round on the evening before certain holidays, such as Labour Day or National Day.
The municipality has set aside €86,500 for this new service and is now searching for a company to take on the job. The additional collection will begin in December 2025 and will run for one year as a trial. If the results meet expectations, the contract can be extended beyond the first year.
The regional cleaning agency Bruxelles-Propreté was founded in 1993 to handle street cleaning and waste collection in the Brussels-Capital Region. Since then, the city has often changed its collection schedules to cope with larger crowds and the rise in tourism in the centre.
Extra collection rounds were first added in 2010 during the Christmas season, and in 2016, evening collections were tested in the summer months. Complaints about full bins, however, continued in the following years.
