Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper): In May 2024, a €8.9 million renovation of the Thur & Taxis bridge in Brussels began, focusing on preserving its original cast iron design while enhancing safety for cyclists and pedestrians. Minister Elke Van den Brandt announced the bridge will be closed to cars for a year during renovations.

The cast-iron bridge over Thurn & Taxis in Brussels built in 1904, is an important part of the area’s history. In May 2024, a major renovation project began to preserve the bridge while updating it for modern use. The restoration will focus on keeping the original design and details of the cast-iron structure, while also making it stronger and long-lasting with new preservation techniques.

How will the Thurn & Taxis bridge renovation improve safety in Brussels?

The renovation of the Thurn & Taxis bridge is also focused on making it safer and easier for cyclists and pedestrians. The pathways will be widened and resurfaced for shared use, and new safety barriers will be added. There will be ramps and better access points for people with reduced mobility. These updates support Brussels’ goals for sustainable city development and improve connections in the Thurn & Taxis area.

The Thurn & Taxis bridge will be closed to cars for a year after the first phase of work. Minister Elke Van den Brandt announced this in parliament. Traffic will go through Havenlaan, where new bus markings are added. The renovation will cost about 8.9 million euros and will be done by the NMBS. Once finished, the bridge will be handed over to the Brussels Capital Region to manage.
