Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Starting next school year, Brussels students under 24 can renew STIB/MIVB passes without certificates. School pass €12/year, Brupass €56, 18-24 Pass covers 175,000 youth; Guy Salon confirms easier, affordable travel.
As VRT News reported, starting next school year, pupils and students living in Brussels who are under 24 will be able to renew their STIB/MIVB school pass without sending a school certificate. Before, students had to have a certificate completed by their school, which slowed down the process and added extra steps.
STIB spokesperson Guy Salon said that this step is no longer needed. The change will make renewing the pass faster and easier. The STIB school pass is for students aged 12 to 24. It costs €12 per year and gives unlimited access to STIB buses, trams, and metro lines. The only exception is line 12 from Brussels Airport, which is not included.
What changes allow Brussels students to renew STIB passes without a school certificate?
They can also opt for the Brupass, which enables passage through the Brussels Region on STIB, De Lijn, TEC, and NMBS. The Brupass costs €56 per year and covers all public transport in the region. Families with 3 or more pupils pay €44 annually for the third and extra passes.
Students who attend school in Brussels but reside elsewhere outside the city must also give a school certificate to obtain a STIB/MIVB school pass. The certificate can be sent by email or delivered in person at a STIB-BOOTIK or KIOSK. Officials mentioned that by requiring verification for non-residents, STIB maintains fairness while supporting a wide range of students who rely on public transport in Brussels.
“We see that 90% of young people in Brussels now use public transport. Before the introduction of this new option, that figure was 70%,
Salon said.
Around 175,000 young people out of 200,000 in that age group now have access to this low-cost option.”
In July 2021, the Brussels government reduced the annual STIB/MIVB school pass price from €50 to €12 for students aged 12 to 24. They aimed to make public transport more accessible and encourage young people to use it more often.
Following this, in February 2022, the Brussels 18-24 Pass was introduced, allowing all Brussels residents aged 18 to 24 to travel on the STIB network for just €12 per year, regardless of their student status. Previously, non-students paid €499 for the same pass.
