Brussels (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): Brussels Airport saw the arrest of a 41-year-old man from France who was found carrying 9kg of cocaine tucked away in his suitcase. As he explained why he took on such a risky occupation he mentioned that it took him 15,000€. His motive for carrying this illicit substance was said to have resulted from his initial decision to pay off this debt over a period of time.
It was on the 6th of June that a 41 years old man flew in to Brussels Airport from Accra Ghana. Upon his arrival he behaved very strangely which made the customs officers there feel that indeed he was worthy of suspicion. His uneasiness led to the luggage check that ensured all of his luggage was truly fine. In the search 24 vacuum sealed packages were found stashed inside his bag. Following a thorough inspection the packages were discovered to hold a total of nine kilograms of cocaine. Someone making a serious run at smuggling drugs into the country would’ve not used that much precious cargo in one hit.
Is the father of ten linked to a criminal group in Brussels?
Soon after the man turned forty he was held in custody. On Monday August 26 prosecutors in Brussels sought that he be incarcerated for three years. According to his lawyer the father of ten children forced himself out of work in France to open up a fish restaurant but had financial difficulties which made him owe a hundred thousand Euros. In his situation someone beckoned him to deliver food and proposed €15,000 in settlement of his debts. The attorney objected to the states assertion that the defendant is part of a crime syndicate claiming that this is incorrect. The man knows only his contact and he does not know anything about the whole trafficking activity. He attempted to assist in the inquiry but was deterred from responding to certain queries because of fear of retribution. On August 30 a decision will be expected.
