Bruges (Brussels Morning Newspaper): The Urban Depot in Assebroek, scheduled to open in the summer of 2024, will feature freerunning and 3×3 basketball. Delays are due to polluted soil, rising insulation costs, and noise complaints. Alderman Franky Demon supports the project, and discussions about additional funding are coming soon.

The Urban Depot in Assebroek is set to be a new center for popular sports like freerunning and 3×3 basketball. Announced a year and a half ago, it will be located in the former De Lijn bus depot and is expected to open in the summer of 2024. The project aims to provide a space for young people to enjoy these trendy sports, enhancing the recreational options in the city.

What are the reasons behind the delays at Bruges’ Urban Depot Project?

The Urban Depot site in Assebroek has not shown any progress, which has caused concern in the community. Despite previous announcements, there has been no construction or significant activity. This lack of progress has raised doubts about the project’s future. There have been no updates on delays or new timelines for the site.

It has been said that the Urban Depot project is facing delays for several reasons. The soil around the area where a park is planned is polluted and needs cleanup. The costs for insulating the roof of the large warehouse have increased. A neighbor has also objected to the project, citing concerns about noise pollution. Despite this, Alderman Franky Demon believes the site is suitable and insists that the city council supports the project. The next council meeting will decide on additional funding for insulation. The organization vzw Basics, in charge of the project, still wants to proceed but needs to ensure the finances are stable. They hope to receive clarity soon, especially regarding the cleanup.
