Board Of Peace or State of War?

Sam Vaknin

The Board of Peace (initially: Gaza Board of Peace) should not be conflated or confused with the Gaza Executive Board. The Board of Peace is presented as a permanent international parallel or even substitute to the United Nations controlled fully and solely by Donald Trump. It is a part of his ongoing attempt to establish a new world and domestic US order with completely new institutions named after him and “owned” by him and his family.

Israel joined the Board of Peace, but still has abiding and deep reservations concerning the Executive Board for Gaza, especially with regards to the participation of Turkish and Qatari officials.  Both Turkey and Qatar have been long-term sponsors of Hamas. With the presence of Russia (Putin himself) and the absence of Saudi Arabia in the Board, it is tilted heavily against Israel.

Israel is now perceived as a hindrance to the eventual reconstruction and economic revival of Gaza. While the demilitarization of Hamas may be attempted, it is unlikely to be consummated. The technocratic government will serve as fig leaf to a resurgent Hamas in the territory and an eventual political takeover.

Both Israel and the USA now regard Iran as the major strategic threat. Israel and the IDF are depleted. Only a military cooperation with the USA can guarantee the neutralization of the Iranian threat.

So, Israel will compromise on Gaza. Israel may even accept the Palestinian Authority as the nucleus of a future, truncated Palestinian state. All this to guarantee the involvement of the USA in the resolution of Iran’s existential threat to the Jewish state.

Trump is disappointed with the United Nations and regards it – justly – as a dysfunctional institution. The Board of Peace will serve as leverage to coerce the United Nations to conform to Trump’s agenda and demands. It is very unlikely to replace the United nations, though. Already several countries have declined to become members of the Peace Board.
