Blankenberge (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Blankenberge will restore its 1908 Paravang. Starting late 2025, rusted iron, wood, and the roof will be repaired. Mayor Björn Prasse links it to a 10-year maintenance plan.
As VRT News reported, Blankenberge, in the province of West Flanders, is carefully restoring its iconic Paravang in stages. They’re starting with the most damaged parts: the iron pieces. They’ll remove rust, fix or replace broken parts, and add new coatings to protect them.
Next, they’ll fix the roof and the wood parts, using materials that look like the originals. Officials mentioned that the company doing the work has to keep the Paravang in good shape for 10 years after it’s done.
What is Blankenberge planning for the historic Paravang?
Blankenberge is linking the restoration work with a long-term maintenance plan. Mayor Björn Prasse says this is a good idea because it makes the project more attractive for companies. The companies that fix the Paravang will also have to maintain it for at least 10 years.
He mentioned that this encourages them to use better materials and work carefully. The city won’t have to pay for another big renovation so soon. The city council will decide on the project at their meeting on June 24th, 2025.
If all goes well, the contract will be given to a company after the summer holidays, which usually end in mid-August in Belgium. The city hopes the actual work can start before the end of this year. They want to fix the Paravang quickly to stop it from getting more damaged.
The Paravang in Blankenberge, a famous seaside spot built in 1908. This pavilion, with its benches and wind protection, has become a landmark of the city. It was constructed for visitor comfort while enjoying views of the sea.
But time and weather have taken their toll. The iron pieces are rusting or damaged by the salt air. There is paint coming off, and the structure is deteriorating. So, they are beginning a major restoration project to put it back together.
