Bilzen (Brussels Morning Newspaper): Suzanne Krekelberg and her son Bas are rowing 4,800 km in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, starting from La Gomera to Antigua. They face tough conditions but remain optimistic about their journey.

Suzanne Krekelberg and her son Bas have started a rowing race called the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. They are rowing 4,800 kilometers from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Caribbean. Suzanne called a radio show to share their experience. She mentioned that they worked hard on their boat before sunrise, and their schedule was very demanding. Despite the challenges, she remains confident about their adventure.

What challenges do Suzanne and Bas face in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic challenge?

The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge tests how far participants can push themselves. Suzanne and her son Bas are among the few who row across the Atlantic Ocean. Their goal is to reach Antigua, but they also want to enjoy the journey. Suzanne is optimistic about the challenge and thinks their strong bond will help them face the hard days ahead.

Suzanne, who runs a chip shop in Bilzen, started her journey to row across the Atlantic Ocean three years ago when a friend invited her to join. After her friend dropped out, her son Bas took her place. They are in a 7-meter rowing boat for 50 days, sleeping in a small cabin and using a bucket for a toilet. Life on the boat is basic, with dry food that they add water to for meals. They have wine and champagne for Christmas and New Year. Suzanne is looking forward to arriving in Antigua and eating fries right away.
