Belgium (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): A new neurostimulation treatment for epilepsy, using Synergia Medical’s NAO. VS system shows promise in reducing seizures for resistant patients.
Epilepsy is a condition where a person has recurring seizures. It impacts about 50 million people worldwide, as per the World Health Organization (WHO). Most people with epilepsy can control it with medications, but about 30% cannot, as per Saint-Luc. For these individuals, a new treatment involving neurostimulation is seen as a considerable advancement, according to neurologist Kristl Vonck from UZ Ghent. The NAOVNS system uses optoelectronic technology with a pulse generator and electrodes around the vagus nerve, which connects to various parts of the brain related to epilepsy. The currents through the vagus nerve can help lessen or stop seizures in a few months, as per Vonck.
What Benefits Does the New NAO-VNS System Offer?
The system charges quickly, has better cybersecurity, and uses fewer metal parts so patients can have MRI scans. The new system was introduced in the AURORA study by Synergia Medical. CEO and co-founder Attila Borbáth mentioned that the system could enhance the accuracy of future treatments. Synergia Medical will monitor the safety of the new treatment system for the next two years.
