Assenede (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Assenede cemetery was renovated after weeds up to 1.5 meters caused concern. Alderman Nick Van Zele stated the contractor cleared brush, improved sanitation, and restored the cemetery to its safe and orderly state.
According to VRT News, the cemetery in Assenede, a town in East Flanders, Belgium, was renovated due to concerns about significant overgrowth. Alderman Nick Van Zele (Samen Sterk) said he inspected the cemetery with the contractor.
“Most of the issues have been solved,”
He said. He added that a few small points still need attention. The contractor is aware of the issues and will address them soon.
What steps did Alderman Van Zele take to renovate Assenede cemetery?
The contractor in charge of Assenede cemetery no longer faces legal action after completing the recent renovation. Van Zele said.
“The contractor solved the issue quickly, so we are not taking any legal measures for now.”
The renovation cleared overgrown weeds and restored order to the cemetery. It also addressed hygiene concerns, including faeces that the opposition reported 2 weeks ago.
“We won’t be seeing any more of those for a while. I hope that’s resolved now,”
Said the alderman.
The contractor will stay with the cemetery for the time being. He is under contract to be there through the end of the year. The municipality will decide to renew the agreement after that. Van Zele said the work shows the municipality’s focus on keeping public spaces well-maintained.
2 weeks ago, the municipality told the maintenance contractor to complete the work as quickly as possible. At several graves, weeds had grown up to 1.5 meters high. The overgrowth made the cemetery look neglected and untidy. Since the order, the contractor has cleared most of the weeds.
