Antwerp (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): The Hoogstraat and Reyndersstraat redevelopment aimed to enhance pedestrian safety with a speed bump. A resident’s petition raised concerns about its effectiveness prompting the district to investigate further measures.

The redevelopment of the shopping street at the intersection of Hoogstraat and Reyndersstraat in Antwerp aimed to make it safer for people walking and to better control traffic. They replaced the old zebra crossing with a speed bump to slow down cars and make it safer for pedestrians crossing the busy area. The speed bump was made to make drivers slow down which helps keep shoppers and other people walking safer especially in a busy area. This change is part of a bigger plan to make the street friendlier for pedestrians and to improve safety overall.

Will the speed bump improve safety at Hoogstraat and Reyndersstraat?

Local resident Koen Verbruggen is worried about how well the speed bump works at the intersection of Hoogstraat and Reyndersstraat in Antwerp. Even though the speed bump is meant to slow down traffic and make it safer for pedestrians Verbruggen has noticed that drivers are still speeding through the area. To address this problem Verbruggen started a petition. He wants to raise awareness about the issue and push for more actions to improve traffic safety. The petition aims to get support from other residents and important people in the community asking the city to take action and find more ways to keep pedestrians safe in the area.

District mayor Paul Cordy (N-VA) responded to Koen Verbruggen’s concerns about the speed bump at the Hoogstraat and Reyndersstraat intersection. Cordy said that this was the first time they had received a complaint about the speed bump but he assured that they are taking the complaint seriously. He explained that the speed bump was made to slow down cars as it was supposed to. However he acknowledged that some vehicles might still go over the bump too quickly. Cordy promised that the district would look into the feedback and consider adding more measures if needed to make sure the speed bump works well to slow down traffic and keep pedestrians safe.

The district will check into the complaint. They understand that Hoogstraat is also for pedestrians so there could be a problem. The police will watch the intersection and if they find any issues adjustments might be needed. One possible solution is bringing back the zebra crossing. They emphasized the importance of being informed so they can take action if necessary.
