Leuven (Brussels Morning Newspaper): Starting January 1, 2025, Leuven will change trash collection days. Alderman Tomas Van Oppens said the changes aim to improve waste collection and reduce sorting mistakes. Extra collection days will be scheduled in January 2025.
In Leuven, people have different days to take out their trash, depending on where they live. In Heverlee, the garbage truck comes on Monday mornings. In Wijgmaal and Wilsele, it comes on Wednesdays and Fridays. Kessel-Lo has pickups on Mondays and Thursdays. Starting January 1st, this will change. Alderman Van Oppens said they want to make waste collection better by organizing the truck routes. They also want everyone to put out their trash in a better way, collecting regular waste and organic waste on the same day to help avoid sorting mistakes.
What changes are coming to Leuven’s trash collection schedule in 2025?
Starting in the New Year, Leuven will change its trash collection days. In Heverlee, trash will be picked up on Tuesdays, while Kessel-Lo will also have pickups on Tuesdays. PMD will be collected every other Thursday in Heverlee and on Wednesdays in Kessel-Lo. In the city center, regular trash will be collected every Friday.

said Van Oppens.
In certain neighborhoods of Leuven, there will be an extended pause in trash collection throughout January. To help residents manage this gap, the city has arranged for extra collection days. Specifically, on January 3, there will be a trash pickup in Wilsele, and on January 7, Kessel-Lo will also have an additional collection. It has been said that Leuven is unique in this aspect as it manages its waste collection services directly. Unlike many other municipalities in the province, that enter into agreements with inter-municipal companies for waste management services, Leuven takes up full responsibility for its trash collection.
