The Ukraine casualties vs Russian casualties 2025 is an eye-opener in its cost in human terms to the continuous war. The amounts of military and civilian lives lost to both Ukraine and Russia are staggering and more than in most conflicts that happen around the world today. Although the figures differ, and conclusive results are yet to be found, this damage is highlighted by the toll that it takes on families, communities and even on countries.

Russo-Ukrainian War Overview of the Casualties

The anthropogenic impact of the war caused by Russia against Ukraine is currently being carried out; it began way back in 2014 when the Crimean peninsula was occupied by the Russian Federation, but the large-scale invasion occurred in February of 2022:

  • There are six fatalities of the Crimea annexation of 2014.
  • The War in Donbas (20142022) killed approximately 142 000 to 144 000 people (both the military and those who were civilians).
  • The resulting deaths (killed and wounded) until the mid of September 2024 are estimated to amount up to 1,000,000 people (homeland and military personnel).

Ukrainian Casualties

Military Losses

During the war casualties among Ukrainian forces have been devastating:

  • According to the recorded data of such sources as the UALosses project, as of August 2025, an estimated 74,000 Ukrainian military personnel were killed or missing.
  • Reports of injured soldiers reportedly fall to about 380,000.
  • The Ukrainian authorities have also admitted to the lost manpower with tens of thousands of people reported lost or taken prisoner during the war.

Civilian Casualties

  • According to the report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), there were at least 13,800 deaths among civilians and 35,555 injuries in Ukraine during the period between the beginning of February 2022 and mid-2025.
  • The death and injury of children have been especially devastating and during the conflict hundreds of children have been killed and injured.

Russian Casualties

Military Losses

The losses of the Russian military are large and are the objects of high-magnitude uncertainty and disputing accounts:

  • By mid-2025, estimates of the number of Russian military fatalities vary wildly with reputable sources estimating between 189,000 and over 273,000 confirmed deaths as a result of open-source investigations.
  • Counting wounded and missing ones, the total casualties of Russian forces can amount to more than a million.
  • Thousands of their casualties have been sustained by Russian PMCs, including Wagner Group.
  • A large number of the conscripts hail in Russian minority and poorer regions which are therefore overrepresented in the casualties.

Civilian Casualties

  • The number of civilian deaths in Russia, even in areas bordering the conflict, has been at a smaller level yet significant as hundreds of people were reported killed because of direct missile attacks or violence connected to them.

Missing Persons, Prisoners, and Prisoner Exchanges

The war has triggered masses of missing people and exchange of prisoners.

  • On both sides thousands of soldiers and civilians have gone missing or have been forcibly disappeared.
  • A high number of prisoner exchanges have since taken place, over thousands of detainees in 2014.
  • There are more people whose accountability is still unaccounted in the midst of the protracted war.

Foreign Participants and Casualties

Both parties have foreign fighters who are part of the war:

  • More than several thousands of foreign fighters have been killed, among them are Russian citizens that fought as separatists and international volunteers on the Ukrainian side.
  • Civilian casualties are also cared for and include foreign citizens caught in the war zones.

Difficulties in Precise Casualty Counting

It is not easy to find accurate figures of the casualties mainly because.

  • The continuing presence of the conflict and ideal fighting ground.
  • Regulated access to occupied spaces.
  • Official control of information, and concealment of battlefield casualties.
  • Different specifications of casualties in different sources.

Still, various independent organisations and investigative initiatives attempt to calculate and report losses on a comprehensive basis.
