The EU stands ready to do its part.
On Wednesday, it will restart a civilian mission to monitor the border crossing between Gaza and Egypt.
This mission can play an important role in supporting the ceasefire (2/2)
Highlighting that achieving peace in Gaza may be “extraordinarily complex,” she mentioned that the civilian mission can serve an “important role” in aiding the ceasefire.
“Today marks a rare moment of hope in the Middle East. The release of hostages is a major success for diplomacy and a crucial milestone toward peace. (US) President (Donald) Trump made this breakthrough possible,”
Kallas also said.
How does von der Leyen view the Gaza ceasefire deal?
On Monday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also expressed the EU’s complete backing for the Gaza ceasefire plan, which is being mediated by the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Türkiye.
“Europe fully supports the peace plan brokered by the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Türkiye. The finalisation of the agreement ending the war today in Sharm el-Sheikh will be a historical milestone,”
von der Leyen noted on X.
She emphasised that they “stand ready to contribute” to the plan’s success with all instruments at their disposal, in particular,
“by providing support on governance and for the reform of the Palestinian Authority.”
“We will be an active force within the Palestinian Donors Group. And we will provide EU funding for the reconstruction of Gaza,”
von der Leyen also said.
The return of the Israeli hostages is a moment of pure joy for those families.

And a moment of relief for the entire world.
It means that a page can be turned. A new chapter can begin.

Why was the EU mission suspended earlier this year?
The European Union’s civilian mission to monitor the Rafah border crossing in January 2025 was suspended in March 2025 due to escalating violence and security concerns, and because of re-escalated hostilities when Israel resumed war on Gaza after a brief ceasefire. The EU mission is meant to provide a neutral, third-party presence to allow people, including the wounded and sick, and humanitarian aid, to flow over the crossing.
