Bree (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The De Weeg campus opened a new outdoor sports facility in Bree with a 6-lane athletics track and areas for javelin, discus, hammer, high jump, long jump, and shot put, serving over 2,000 students and the local community.

As VRT News reported, a new outdoor sports facility has opened at the De Wee campus in Bree, in the province of Limburg, Belgium. The campus is built on the site of the former hospital. This facility is the 1st completed part of the campus redevelopment. The new sports fields will serve students during school hours and the community in the evenings.

Luc Evens, director of the KOSM school group, said the facility is an important addition to the campus.

“We are very pleased to inaugurate these outdoor sports fields after just three years,”

he said.

“The fields provide students with spaces for sports and physical education and show our commitment to a versatile campus.”

What facilities does the new De Weeg campus in Bree offer?

More than 2,000 students attend the De Weeg campus. The new athletics track at the De Weeg campus has officially opened. The track has 6 full lanes and special zones for javelin, discus, hammer throw, high jump, long jump, and shot put. Students from the secondary schools on the campus tested the track on its first day.

“We did cross-country and a survival run. You can also play volleyball here, which is really nice,”

says Madou.

“I think it’s really cool and beautiful,”

Elisabeth continues.

“You can also come and play sports with your friends on the weekends, especially in the summer. So I’m really looking forward to that.”

The broader campus plan includes more than just the outdoor sports fields. A sports complex and swimming pool will be constructed along with a student and staff residential tower. The last phase will feature a central park described as the green heart of the campus, linking all campus areas together. The latest schedule anticipates completion of the full project in 2028.

The De Weeg campus, a renovation of the previous hospital building, has been in process since its planning started in 2021. Construction began in 2022 to turn the site of the hospital into a contemporary campus for education and sport.

In the last couple of years, across Belgium and Europe, there have been similar redevelopment projects to the De Weeg campus. In 2020, KU Leuven developed the Arenberg campus through the conversion of older institutional land and buildings into student accommodation, sports facilities, and education resources. Between 2018 and 2021, UCLouvain in Louvain-la-Neuve redeveloped former industrial land into a campus that included sports fields and green areas for students and the community.
