Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Diogo Jota, a 28-year-old, and his brother André, a 26-year-old, died in a car crash in Spain on July 3, 2025. Jota played for Liverpool, Portugal, and won the 2024–25 Premier League.

As VRT News reported, Diogo Jota, a 28-year-old Portuguese football player who played for Liverpool and the national team, passed away in a car accident early on July 3, 2025. The accident happened on the A-52 highway in the Zamora province of Spain.

Jota was travelling with his younger brother, André, 26-year-old, who was also a professional football player. Their car, a high-performance vehicle believed to be a Lamborghini, went off the road.

Officials mentioned that it’s thought that a tire blew out while they were overtaking another car, causing the driver to lose control. The car then went off the road and quickly caught fire, spreading to nearby plants. People nearby called for help, but both brothers died at the scene.

What led to the fatal crash of Diogo and André Jota?

According to officials, Diogo Jota was a top player, winning the Premier League and UEFA Nations League. He had just gotten married and had 3 children. The Portuguese Football Federation and Liverpool FC are very sad. They mentioned that people are remembering Jota with moments of silence before games. There will be more tributes in Portugal and the UK.

Diogo Jota began his professional journey in Portugal, playing for Paços de Ferreira. In 2016, Atlético Madrid signed him for €7 million. Although he scored in a pre-season game, he never played an official match for them. Instead, Atlético loaned him to FC Porto for the 2016–17 season, where he gained valuable experience in top-level Portuguese and European football.

He then moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers in England on loan for the 2017–18 season. Officials mentioned that his performances were so good that Wolves were promoted to the Premier League. This led to a permanent transfer in 2018 for €14 million.

In 2020, Liverpool signed him for €44.7 million. At Liverpool, he became a key player, known for his smart play and scoring. He helped the team win important titles, including the Premier League in 2024–25. Jota also played for Portugal.
