Tehran (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian, has announced that his government is putting its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on hold “until certain conditions are met, including ensuring the security of the facilities and scientists.”

Tehran has slammed the agency for its “double standards,” claiming it has released misleading reports on the country’s nuclear program. In June, the IAEA determined that Tehran was in breach of its nuclear safeguards obligations, which led to Israel launching air strikes on Iran the following day. Iran has accused the IAEA of giving Israel a “final pretext” for the strikes.

What accusations has Iran made against Rafael Grossi?

Iran has taken a clear perspective against the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi flatly rejecting its chief, Rafael Grossi’s, request to visit nuclear facilities hit by Israel and the US during a 12-day conflict earlier this month.

“Grossi’s insistence on visiting the bombed sites under the pretext of safeguards is meaningless and possibly even malign in intent,”

Stated Araghchi on X on Monday.

“Iran reserves the right to take any steps in defence of its interests, its people and its sovereignty.”

What did President Pezeshkian tell Emmanuel Macron directly?

Moreover, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has informed his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, that Tehran has suspended cooperation with the IAEA due to what he described as Grossi’s “destructive” conduct towards Iran, according to his office.

“The action taken by parliament members … is a natural response to the unjustified, unconstructive, and destructive conduct of the director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency,”

Pezeshkian informed Macron in a phone call, according to a presidency announcement.

When Macron expressed concerns about Tehran’s declining cooperation with the IAEA, Pezeshkian highlighted the agency’s “biased behaviour,” citing the release of “inaccurate reports” about Iran’s nuclear activities and their failure to address attacks on their facilities, which had eroded trust. Macron also extended his condolences to the families of Iranian casualties from recent Israeli military actions.
