Oudenaarde (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – From 9 July to late August, infrastructure works on Oudenaarde’s Markt aim to improve electricity supply and ensure greater safety during public events.

There will be improvements made. For instance, more electrical connections will be made, and sunken mosaic cobblestones will be restored in some locations.

The Markt’s existing electrical cabinets need to be replaced.

“That is why 4 extra connection points are being installed so that the cabinets themselves no longer have to be opened, which increases safety and ensures a more efficient connection during events,”

says alderman for Public Works Maarten Blondeel (Meer dan Groen).

“The new infrastructure is also resistant to water infiltration, which increases reliability. In addition, there will be an additional well to more easily connect waste water, for example from the summer bar, to the sewage system on the other side of the street, as required by law.”

Additionally, the mosaic cobblestones in Belgium‘s Broodstraat and Markt will be renovated.

Since there is less traffic in the summer, the city has chosen to have the repair done during that time. To ensure that the Markt is constantly open, the work will be done in two stages.

Everywhere is open to bikers and pedestrians, and the stores are still open. Although the layout will change, the weekly Thursday market will still be held on the Markt and in the Hoogstraat.

The first phase will involve construction on the Hoogstraat side from July 9 to July 25. Up until the work zone, this roadway will be temporarily open in both directions, with a turning point for (small) motorized traffic.

The Nederstraat side will host the second part from August 18 to 29. In order to maintain access to Nederstraat, the direction of traffic in Einestraat will be momentarily changed.

Wijngaardstraat, Jezuïetenplein, Tussenbruggen, Margaretha van Parmastraat, and Mathijs Casteleinstraat will all be used as diversion routes. From July 9 to August 29, De Lijn will adhere to this detour.

Visitors can park for free for two hours using the blue disc at the Tacambaroplein parking lots, as well as in the Hoogstraat, Nederstraat, Kattestraat, Broodstraat, and Einestraat parking lots on the Markt, since the area around the Markt will be temporarily designated as a blue zone.

How will the new connection points improve electrical access in Oudenaarde?

By adding more outlets in key locations, the new electrical connection points being erected around Oudenaarde’s Markt will enhance electrical accessibility and accommodate a greater variety of public activities.

This improvement will eliminate the need for laborious or dangerous extension setups by making it simpler and more dependable to obtain power for market stalls, festivals, illumination, and other temporary or permanent installations.

More connecting points improve electrical load distribution, reduce overload concerns, and increase user convenience and safety. Additionally, it enables more adaptable and scalable usage of the electrical infrastructure, meeting increasing demand as the region hosts more power-demanding events or activities.
