Ghent (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A worker was seriously injured after being hit by a tram on Martelaarslaan in Ghent. Trams are halted. Police are investigating. De Lijn hasn’t announced when service will resume.

As VRT News reported, the tram service on Martelaarslaan in Ghent has been stopped because of an accident. A worker was hit by a tram near a crossing. The worker was on the other side of the road and tried to cross the tracks through the trees in the middle, which may have made it hard for the driver to see him.

The driver had just left the stop, and it was too late for the driver to stop for the man. The injured worker was awake, offering support with his serious leg injury. His co-workers and members of the surrounding community were providing care to him before the ambulance arrived. They had barricaded the area to protect the man’s privacy as well as care by the paramedics before taking him to the hospital.

How did a worker get hit by a tram on Ghent’s Martelaarslaan?

Police and investigators looked into what happened. Officials might check the safety of the area, including the trees in the middle, to see if changes are needed to stop similar accidents from happening again.

As for the authorities, incidents involving pedestrians or bicyclists occur regularly on this busy roadway in Ghent. According to them, trams typically accelerate or decelerate approaching the stop, which may reduce the chances of accidents, but does not eliminate them.

It’s not clear how long the trams will be stopped. De Lijn hasn’t said how long it will take or if they’ll use buses instead. The police are still investigating, and trams won’t run again until they’re done.
