Lummen (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Lummen installed 298 solar panels on BKO, Chiro Leouki, and De Zonnebloem school. Wim Vangeel says the €88,000 project boosts local green energy and pays back in 2–3 years.
As VRT News reported, Lummen is working to cut down on CO2 and use more green energy. They’ve already put up solar panels on buildings. There are 200 panels at BKO and Chiro Leouki, and 98 at De Zonnebloem school.
They mentioned that this is part of a plan to make clean energy where it’s used. By using solar power, the city is using less fossil fuels and helping the environment. The new solar panels in Meldert are another step in growing the city’s green energy.
How is Lummen using smart solar power to go green and save?
Wim Vangeel, the city’s Spatial Planning leader, says the solar panels are mostly for local use. He mentioned that this means the energy is used right where it’s made, cutting down on waste and helping the city be self-sufficient with energy. When there’s extra energy, like during holidays, it’s automatically sent to other city buildings that need it. This system makes sure all the renewable energy is used and nothing is wasted.
According to Wim Vangeel, the city’s Spatial Planning leader, this is “sustainable, smart, and efficient.” Each new solar panel installation helps the city get closer to its climate goals. He mentioned that by using buildings like the BKO, Chiro Leouki, and De Zonnebloem school, the city is helping the environment and showing leadership in climate action.
These efforts are part of a bigger plan called ‘Lummen puts the climate on the dot’, which focuses on real steps toward a greener future. The new solar panels cost €88,000, all paid for by the city as part of its climate plan. These panels not only help the environment by cutting down on pollution but also make good financial sense.
Officials mentioned that the solar panels on the BKO and Chiro Leouki buildings should pay for themselves in a little over 3 years. The system at De Zonnebloem school is expected to pay for itself in about 2 years.
