Jerusalem (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – On Sunday, Israeli military strikes resulted in the deaths of at least 23 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to local health authorities. Among those killed were a local journalist and a senior official from the rescue service.

On Friday, the Israeli armed forces announced that it had carried out additional strikes in Gaza overnight, targeting 75 locations, which included weapons storage installations and missile launchers.

Who were the key victims of Sunday’s attacks?

Recent fatalities in the Israeli offensive occurred due to distinct Israeli airstrikes in Khan Younis to the south, Jabalia in the north, and Nuseirat in central Gaza, according to medical sources.

In Jabalia, local journalist Hassan Majdi Abu Warda and multiple family members were reported killed by an airstrike that targeted his home earlier on Sunday.

A recent airstrike in Nuseirat resulted in the deaths of Ashraf Abu Nar, a senior official with the territory’s civil emergency service, and his wife, as reported by medics.

According to the Hamas-run Gaza government media office, Abu Warda’s death has brought the total number of Palestinian journalists killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, to 220.

The media office reported separately that Israeli forces control 77% of the Gaza Strip due to ground operations, evacuation orders, and bombardment preventing residents from returning home.

On Sunday, the armed wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad issued separate statements declaring that their fighters conducted multiple ambushes and assaults with bombs and anti-tank rockets targeting Israeli forces in various locations throughout Gaza.

How many Palestinians have died since the October 7 attacks?

Following a cross-border assault by Hamas militants on October 7, 2023, which resulted in 1,200 fatalities according to Israeli estimates and the abduction of 251 individuals into Gaza, Israel commenced both an air and ground offensive in the territory. According to Gaza health authorities, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 53,900 Palestinians and has wreaked havoc on the coastal strip. Aid organizations report that severe malnutrition is widespread.
