Aalter (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The bridge between Maria-Aalter and Knesselare over the E40 is closed to traffic after an accident. Only pedestrians and cyclists may cross. Tom Pacqué says inspection continues.
As VRT News reported, a bridge connecting Maria-Aalter and Knesselare was damaged after an accident. An initial check showed some structural problems. Because of this, the Agency for Roads and Traffic has closed the bridge. They want to do a more thorough investigation.
They mentioned that the bridge is a key route over the E40 motorway and the railway line, linking the 2 towns. Because of the closure of the bridge, traffic is now using smaller, rural roads. These roads aren’t built for many cars, especially during busy times. This causes delays and could lead to traffic jams and accidents on the narrower roads.
Why is the Aalter bridge over the E40 closed, and what are the detour plans?
Local officials know the bridge closure is causing problems and are working on solutions. Tom Pacqué, the Public Works leader in Aalter, said the bridge is important and understands the difficulties. The town is figuring out how to help traffic move better between Maria-Aalter and Knesselare.
There are detours, but the town might add more signs, control traffic, or fix up some roads. How long the bridge stays closed depends on the inspection results. The local government is focused on making sure the detour routes are safe.
The bridge over the E40 motorway is closed, and officials are letting drivers know. They’ve put up LED signs on the main roads to warn people about the closure and suggest different routes. It’s unclear how long the bridge will be closed; authorities are still checking it out.
Tom Pacqué said they’re talking with the Flemish Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV). They’re discussing if some vehicles, like those under 3.5 tons, can still use the bridge, or if they can use a one-way system. Nothing is decided yet, and they expect to have more information later today, May 12, 2025.
According to officials, even though the bridge is closed, the E40 motorway is open as usual. Cars can still drive on the E40 without any problems. They’re checking the bridge to see if it’s safe and trying to cause as little trouble as possible for local traffic.
