Oostrozebeke (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Yesterday evening, a van accident involved a direct hit on a bus shelter in Oostrozebeke. The van took quick action to steer out of the way of a different vehicle which did not obey traffic rules. The bus shelter was completely destroyed, while the subsequent house fence also suffered significant damage.

The van crashed into the bus shelter in Oostrozebeke on Friday evening after attempting to evade a car that had not yielded to traffic. The bus shelter sustained complete destruction from the crash, while the fences alongside the house suffered major damage.

There were no occupants in the bus shelter when the crash happened, so vital injuries were avoided. The incident happened at Knokstraat’s intersection with Tieltsesteenweg when a driver of a passenger car failed to maintain priority, which forced the van to avoid the car and crash.

The accident occurred as a passenger vehicle tried to move across Tieltsesteenweg without respecting vehicles coming from the opposite direction. The vehicle on Tieltsesteenweg rear-ended a passenger car, causing it to crash into the bus shelter.

The bus shelter suffered complete destruction, together with damage to the adjacent property fence section. Both drivers sustained minor injuries. The authorities sent firefighters to respond, as well as police, who had to break down the bus shelter while cleaning up debris and removing the damaged cars.

“Fortunately, it’s material damage; it could have ended much worse,” responds the neighbour whose fence was damaged. “Imagine if someone was in that bus shelter or waiting outside.”

“By the way, it’s not the first time my fence has been destroyed. During the rally, someone also flew off the road.”

What is the history of traffic incidents in Oostrozebeke?

The municipality of Oostrozebeke, located in West Flanders, Belgium, has witnessed multiple traffic accidents during recent years at a busy crossroads between Knokstraat and Tieltsesteenweg. The area has faced numerous accidents because drivers do not yield, per local reports, particularly during times of heavy traffic or weather challenges.

The neighbour affected by the recent crash highlighted a recurring issue, stating, “By the way, it’s not the first time my fence has been destroyed. The rally event resulted in someone leaving the road”. The official statistics about road accidents in Oostrozebeke are unavailable to the public, but Belgium’s national safety data demonstrates that failing to yield causes 15% of all reported collisions in 2022.
