Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – EU leaders held a videoconference with leaders of Canada, Türkiye, UK, Iceland and Norway to debrief them on their defence goals and agreed on cooperation.
After the Special European Council on March 6 on defence and Ukraine, EU Commission President von der Leyen, EU Council President Antonio Costa and High Representative Kaja Kallas virtually met and discussed international cooperation on military defence.
All leaders insisted on the importance of cooperation on defence with like-minded NATO partners, an EU official told Brussels Morning Newspaper, and renewed their commitment to keep supporting Ukraine.
This video conference comes at a time when the US administration’s willingness to cooperate with its NATO partners on defence is questioned, and when President Trump has stopped sharing intelligence information with Ukraine and interrupted its military aid after an unsuccessful meeting with Zelensky over a possible agreement.
The participating partner countries welcomed the ReArm EU initiative and congratulated the EU on the key decisions taken at the extraordinary Council.
President Costa highlighted his commitment to continue such international close coordination.
