London (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy will meet UK PM Keir Starmer, Starmer’s office stated, ahead of a broader summit of European leaders in London to examine a peace plan for Ukraine.
“The Prime Minister and President Zelenskiy will be meeting in Downing Street this afternoon,”
A spokesperson for Starmer’s office expressed.
The arrangement follows an extraordinary public confrontation between Zelenskiy and Donald Trump at the White House over the fight with Russia, with the U.S. president threatening to shrink support for Ukraine.
Zelenskiy had noticed the conversation in the Oval Office as an option to persuade Trump not to side with Moscow.
What message did Starmer convey to Trump and Zelenskiy?
A few days earlier, PM Starmer spoke to both Trump and Zelenskiy and voiced his “unwavering support” for Ukraine, reflecting similar statements of support for Zelenskiy from other European leaders. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer talked to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and conveyed his support for Ukraine’s leader.
“The Prime Minister spoke to President Zelenskyy this evening and stressed the need for everyone to work together,”
A statement given by Starmer’s office after the call stated.
“The Prime Minister expressed his support for President Zelenskyy as Ukraine’s democratically elected leader and said that it was perfectly reasonable to suspend elections during war time as the UK did during World War II.”
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Zelenskiy as “a dictator without elections” and stated he had more reasonable move fast to secure a peace or he would have no nation left. The announcement from Starmer’s office did not directly refer to Trump’s remarks.
It also said:
“The Prime Minister reiterated his support for the US-led efforts to get a lasting peace in Ukraine that deterred Russia from any future aggression.”
