Kyiv says Russia launched 139 drones over Ukraine

Kyiv (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Ukraine’s defence forces reported that since the evening of February 7, Russia had launched 139 drones of various types over Ukraine, and its air defence had intercepted 67 of them, and another 71 drones failed in the field and did not achieve their targets.

In the Sumy region, a Russian drone hit a private home. According to officials, it has resulted in fire and completely demolished the house, the authorities stated.

The Air Force of Ukraine confirmed that in the areas of Sumy, Cherkasy, Kyiv, Poltava, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Kirovohrad, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Dnipropetrovsk, and Odesa, drones were shot down.

In the Kyiv region, remains from downed drones fell in the Bucha and Fastiv districts; it ignited hay, which was suppressed.  The air force reported that the night attack also impacted the Dnipropetrovsk and Poltava regions. 

How has Russia escalated drone attacks in recent months?

During the last two months, Russia continued to carry out massive drone attacks against Ukraine. The attacks involved military and civilian infrastructure in almost all regions of Ukraine. 

Russian forces have been carrying out massive drone attacks on Ukraine time and again. For instance, on February 6-7, they conducted 112 Shahed and decoy drones from different regions of Kursk, Oryol, and Bryansk Oblasts. Likewise, on February 5-6, they carried out 77 drones to attack the Ukrainian cities of Kharkiv and Kyiv.

On January 30, 2025, four people were reported dead, and nine others, among them a child, were injured as a Russian drone hit an apartment building in Sumy. Over the night, Ukraine said that it intercepted 37 of the 81 drones launched by Russia.

On 1 February 2025, At least twelve civilians were reported dead in an attack by Russian missiles and drones targeting the residential areas as well as energy infrastructure across the six Ukrainian regions: Khmelnytskyi, Kyiv, Odesa, Sumy, and Zaporizhzhia. The assault included more than 123 drones and over 40 missiles.
