Every year, volunteers team up with the local library to organize a book sale. This year, the sale was very successful, raising 10,000 euros. The money comes from older books donated by the library and books given by community members. The funds will help support library programs and keep the library a valuable resource for everyone.
Will Genk’s book sale reach €12,000 this year?
“We hope to reach 12,000 euros, but I think it will be hard,” says Lieve Willems, a volunteer at the book fair since it started. She is troubled by the unfairness in the third world and wants to help raise money. Last week, books and CDs were sold for 2 euros each, but today they are only 1 euro to collect more funds. It was quite busy on 11th November, and Lieve is always surprised by how many people still love paper books.
Graphic designer and artist Piet Seurs visit the sale every year to find inspiration for new projects. He said, “Last year, I discovered a book about 19th-century technology here, which I used to create a digital collage. I’m excited to see what I can find this year.” Meanwhile, Christine Scheepmans is searching for specific titles by Agatha Christie, stating, “They are becoming rare, and I have a list of the ones I need.” After the interview, she spots an Agatha Christie book she already owns but decides to take it home as a gift for a friend.
