Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The European Union reiterated the unaffected approach towards Ukraine and support for its struggle against Russian aggression.

As reported by Ukrinform, EU spokesman Peter Stano expressed in Brussels during a press briefing at the European Commission, that the EU’s position on aiding Ukraine will not change.

How does the EU view its support for Ukraine?

“When it comes to the European position, it remains intact. It’s captured in successive conclusions of the European Council. The European Union and its member states persist to be committed to supporting Ukraine and continue defending Ukraine in its efforts to restore its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Peter Stano, the lead spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy of EU said.

How does the EU respond to changes in US policy?

At the same time, the spokesman for the European Commission, Eric Mamer, reacting to the journalists’ request to remark on the statements by the U.S. president-elect concerning his intention to end the war quickly, stated: “We are not going to be remarking on every statement that has been made by the new president of the United States. As you know, we deal with facts, not with statements. We are persuaded that the United States, just like the European Union, has a fundamental interest in a strong and sovereign Ukraine. As we have been expressing all along, the war can halt tomorrow if the Russians prevent their aggression. That is our starting position,” Mamer stated.

Moreover, he reaffirmed the European Commission’s strong perspective on achieving peace in Ukraine, adding that it continues to enforce its policy and priorities to this end. “We are the major supplier of support to Ukraine on all fronts and in our efforts to ensure a fair and stable peace for Ukraine and its future,” Mamer went on.

Earlier in the day, the major leaders across the European Union congratulated Donald Trump on his success in the U.S. presidential election and voiced hope for further strengthening of the transatlantic coalition in overcoming geopolitical challenges and supporting common democratic interests and values.
