Seoul (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Josep Borrell expressed that he will discuss ways to increase the EU’s security and defence partnership with South Korea during his visit to Seoul.
On 03 Nov 2024, Josep Borell the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy visited the Joint Security Area in the Demilitarized Zone separating the two Koreas.
My visit today of the Demilitarised Zone – DMZ – between the Republic of Korea and the DPRK is yet another reminder of the need to invest more in peace.

Meetings are likely to address shared worries over North Korea’s dispatch of troops to Russia in support of its fight in Ukraine and their joint responses. Last week, Borrell strongly criticised North Korea’s deployment of troops to Russia, calling his upcoming visit to Seoul a
“timely and meaningful opportunity to examine these worrying developments.”
During his visit, Borrell will also hold discussions with Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun.
“In an age of geopolitical tensions, where international law is being challenged in both regions, the security of Europe and that of the Indo-Pacific are increasingly interlinked,”
Borrell expressed before flying to Seoul.
