UAE and EU discuss urgent ceasefire for Gaza conflict

Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – UAE President Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan spoke by phone with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the EU Commission, to discuss the situation in Gaza.

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan held a phone conversation to discuss the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon. 

What steps are being taken to prevent escalation in Gaza?

According to sources, both leaders emphasized the significance of protecting civilians in line with international law and ensuring the safe and satisfactory delivery of humanitarian aid to alleviate their suffering in the conflict zones. The EU chief thanked the UAE for its support for its measures and humanitarian initiatives in Gaza and Lebanon, and for continuing to preserve strong ties with the EU.

They are also concerned with efforts to prevent the further escalation of uncertainties in the Middle East, stressing the need for collective effort to contain the conflict, which poses a grave threat to regional security and stability. The two leaders restated their support for a just, comprehensive, and lasting stability in the region, grounded in the two-state solution.

Sheikh Mohamed highlighted the UAE’s commitment to working alongside international and regional partners, including the EU, to stop the expansion of conflict in the Middle East and provide humanitarian aid to civilians.

How are UAE-EU ties evolving amid the Gaza conflict?

Sheikh Mohamed and President von der Leyen also reviewed links between the UAE and the European Union, exploring manners to strengthen ties and execute shared interests.  Sheikh Mohamed reaffirmed the UAE’s dedication to enhancing strategic connections with the EU and its member states, with a priority on mutual development and cooperation in areas such as trade and investment. He also voiced his support for further Gulf-European collaboration to benefit both regions.

For her part, Presiden of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen voiced her appreciation for the UAE’s support for regional stability and its actions and humanitarian initiatives in Gaza and Lebanon. She also commended the partnership between the UAE, the European Union, and its institutions across various fields.
