Mechelen (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): Police in Mechelen seized a noisy car driven by a 19-year-old after numerous complaints about reckless driving. Mayor Bart Somers emphasized the need for order, stating, “The city isn’t a race track.”

The police in Mechelen recently took away a car that had been causing a lot of problems in the southern neighborhoods. They seized the car on 22nd September at a gas station on Oscar Van Kesbeekstraat. Dirk Van de Sande, a police spokesperson, said they got many complaints from local people about the driver’s bad behavior. Residents reported that the driver was speeding and driving in a reckless way, making loud noises with the tires. This was dangerous for the community and disturbed everyone’s peace.

How can Mechelen balance celebrations with noise control?

After getting complaints, the police watched closely and stopped a car to help local people feel safer. This is part of their plan to keep neighborhoods calm. The issue is that luxury and sports cars often make noise, and these complaints happen a lot. Van de Sande said it’s usually the same loud cars causing trouble. These cars are often rented for special events like weddings, but when they drive around, they make a lot of noise and disturb people living nearby.

It has been said that the cars are used for celebrations, their loud noise can become a big problem for other people. The honking can last for days, making residents very frustrated. Since these complaints keep happening, it shows that this is a regular issue tied to the tradition of celebrating with rented luxury cars. However, it raises concerns about how to enjoy festivities while also keeping public order, and it suggests that there might be a need for rules to handle this problem.

The police said they have sent warning letters to drivers and rental companies about the noise bothering people and the dangerous driving. They warned that if the noise didn’t stop, they would take the cars away. That happened on 22nd September after many complaints when they seized a car with a 19-year-old driver, two minors, and one adult. Mayor Bart Somers said the city isn’t a race track and that taking the car was a strong action to prevent more problems or accidents.
