Mechelen: (Brussels Morning) – Police arrested an unlicensed, underage driver with a rented German car no ID or rental papers after receiving complaints about his dangerous driving in Mechelen. The car was seized to prevent further risks.

On 4th July 2024 at night the police with a special camera spotted a suspicious car on Van Benedenlaan. They then stopped the car to check it out. When the police stopped the car they found a young driver. They realized the driver didn’t have a valid license which is a big traffic rule violation. Even the driver didn’t have an ID card making the situation even more suspicious. The fancy car the driver was in had German plates and was a rental. When asked for the rental papers the driver couldn’t show any. The police spokesperson mentioned that the driver didn’t have a license, ID, or rental papers for the German car. Because of these violations the police had to take action against the driver.

What Prompted the Police to arrest the Unlicensed Driver’s Car in Mechelen?

Before the incident on Van Benedenlaan the police had gotten many complaints about how the young driver was driving in Hombeek. People in the area saw and reported that the driver was doing dangerous and reckless things while driving. Elke Waters from the police said they got many reports about bad driving in Hombeek. They used camera footage to watch the driver and collect proof of the dangerous driving. Because of all the complaints and proof they had the police were already watching out for the car. When the ANPR system showed a match and they stopped the car it made them even more sure about taking action. Because of what they found the police took away the BMW and kept the car to stop the driver from causing danger on the roads. This was done because the driver didn’t have the right papers and wasn’t following the traffic rules.

The guy who was driving in the recent Van Benedenlaan incident had done similar things before so the police knew him well. Elke Waters from the police said he had a similar problem last year and they took another car from him back then too. In the last incident the guy was driving without a license just like now. His driving was risky so the police had to step in. Even he was high on drugs at that time which made things even more serious. The guy kept breaking the rules many times showing he didn’t care about safety. Because this kept happening the police had to take tough action like taking his car to stop more risks on the road.
