Police Search European Parliament Offices in Major EU Funding Probe in Brussels

Brussels, 22 October, (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Police searches at European Parliament offices in Brussels and Strasbourg have brought renewed attention to an investigation into suspected misuse of European Union funds. The EU Parliament raids concern financial activities linked to the former Identity and Democracy political group, with European prosecutors examining whether parliamentary resources were used in breach of EU funding rules.

The investigation has attracted attention because it concerns public money allocated to political activities within one of the European Union’s most important democratic institutions.

European Parliament Offices Targeted in Financial Investigation

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) has confirmed searches at parliamentary premises in Belgium and France in connection with an investigation involving a former European Parliament political group.

The inquiry centres on Identity and Democracy, which operated during the 2019–2024 parliamentary term before being dissolved following the 2024 European elections.

Administrative premises associated with Patriots for Europe, a political group formed after those elections, were among the locations reported to have been searched.

Patriots for Europe includes France’s National Rally, Hungary’s Fidesz and Spain’s Vox.

The investigation concerns financial activities attributed to the former group rather than establishing wrongdoing by its successor organisations.

European Prosecutors Examine Suspected Misuse of EU Funds

European prosecutors are examining whether parliamentary funding was spent in accordance with financial regulations governing political groups.

Such allocations are intended to support authorised parliamentary work, including administrative operations, policy activities and other eligible expenditure.

The inquiry has raised questions about financial documentation, payments and the oversight of spending during the previous parliamentary term.

The EPPO is responsible for investigating and prosecuting criminal offences affecting the European Union’s financial interests.

Its involvement reflects the potential seriousness of suspected irregularities, although an investigation does not establish that criminal offences have occurred.

Patriots for Europe Responds to Prosecutors’ Searches

Patriots for Europe acknowledged the searches but rejected suggestions that it was legally responsible for the activities of Identity and Democracy.

In its public statement, the group said there was “no legal continuity” between the two organisations and maintained that it was not involved in the ongoing investigation.

The European Parliament’s press service also confirmed that the institution was cooperating with the relevant authorities.

According to Euronews, Parliament said it had no additional comment on the searches.

Previous Audit Identified €4.3 Million in Questioned Spending

The investigation follows findings by European Parliament financial officials concerning approximately €4.3 million in expenditure by Identity and Democracy between 2019 and 2024.

The reported irregularities included donations and contracts awarded through procedures that allegedly failed to meet parliamentary financial requirements.

Prosecutors previously conducted searches in Belgium, France, Italy and Spain in June 2026 as part of the wider investigation.

Why the Funding Investigation Matters for Brussels

The EU Parliament raids have renewed questions about the financial accountability of political groups receiving European taxpayers’ money.

For Brussels, where the Parliament conducts much of its legislative and committee work, the investigation highlights the importance of transparent financial administration within EU institutions.

The findings could also affect discussions over whether improperly spent funds should be recovered and which organisation, if any, would bear responsibility.

No criminal conviction has resulted from the latest searches, and allegations remain subject to investigation.

What Happens Next in the European Parliament Probe?

European prosecutors will continue assessing evidence relating to the former parliamentary group’s expenditure.

A European Parliament committee has previously considered whether Patriots for Europe could be required to repay funds associated with Identity and Democracy, although the question of financial responsibility remains unresolved.

Authorities have not announced new charges or a timetable for concluding the investigation.

The next developments will depend on prosecutors’ findings and any subsequent decisions by the relevant European institutions or courts.
