Key developments include a Foreign Affairs Committee mission to Iceland to discuss security and EU-Iceland relations, delegations visiting Finland and Greenland for sustainability and indigenous rights discussions, and a schedule of upcoming ministerial council sessions in Dublin and Brussels.
European Parliament Delegations Focus on International Relations and Sustainability
The European Parliament has organised multiple committee delegations travelling to various international locations between 21 and 24 September 2026. A delegation from the Foreign Affairs Committee is scheduled to travel to Iceland to engage in discussions regarding foreign policy, security matters, and the future trajectory of EU-Iceland relations. These talks follow closely after the referendum held in Iceland on 29 August.
Concurrently, from 21 to 23 September, committee delegations are visiting Finland, designated as the 2026 European Capital of Culture. These visits aim to examine topics surrounding culture and regional sustainability. Additionally, members of the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs committee are meeting with authorities in Helsinki to gather insights into Finland’s national preparedness framework and civil protection model.
Greenland Cooperation and Indigenous Rights Delegations
Members of the European Parliament from both the Transport and Tourism committee and the Women’s Rights and Gender Equality committee are undertaking a joint visit to Greenland from 21 to 24 September. The discussions centre on reinforcing EU-Greenland cooperation, with a particular focus on transport infrastructure projects and the promotion of sustainable tourism initiatives.
Within the framework of the Women’s Rights and Gender Equality committee mission, Members of the European Parliament are scheduled to examine the living conditions of indigenous women and girls. Furthermore, the delegation will address critical issues including gender-based violence and the distinct impacts of climate change on vulnerable indigenous communities residing in the region.
Upcoming Meetings of the European Council and Council of the European Union
The Oireachtas European Update also highlights the schedule of upcoming meetings for the European Council and the Council of the European Union over the ensuing weeks. Ministerial engagements begin with the Competitiveness Council scheduled for 24 September 2026.
Following this, an informal meeting of energy ministers is set to take place in Dublin on 28 and 29 September 2026. Running concurrently from 28 to 29 September, the Agriculture and Fisheries Council will convene to address sector-specific policy matters.
Additional ministerial configurations scheduled include the Foreign Affairs Council addressing defence matters on 28 September 2026, followed by meetings of the Justice and Home Affairs Council divided into home affairs sessions on 1 October 2026 and justice sessions on 2 October 2026.
